Abstract Objective To discuss the impact and lessons of Japan's Fukushima nuclear accident in nearly four years. Methods Fukushima nuclear accident induced by the tsunami triggered earthquake in 2011 in Japan. This accident was the second accident of history followed the Chernobyl nuclear accident which was rated as the seventh nuclear accident. Results After the Fukushima nuclear accident, external irradiation dose rate in environment increased, which mainly resulted from leakage of 134Cs and 137Cs in Fukushima nuclear accident, meanwhile 131I also was detected in human breast milk. The activity of 131I and 137Cs which are the most harmful to people and the environment ranged from 100 to 500 PBq and from 6 to 20 PBq, respectively. Further study found that there were chromosome aberration rate increased dramatically in spleen lymphocyte of Apodumus argenteus and Mus Mmusulus in moderate and high pollution districts in Fukushima prefecture. Conclusion Fukushima nuclear accident in nearly four years has a huge influence on human beings health, other biology and environment. A lot of lessons should be learned, for example, staf leave, health administration, information communication and post-disaster reconstruction.
