Abstract Objective To analyze the radioactivity levels and obtain the baseline value of radionuclide in the food in the area around the Haiyang Nuclear Power Plant, and to provide a basis for assessing the impact of the nuclear power station on the population. Methods To collect 22 kinds of food samples of daily consumption diet around the nuclear power plant in the 50 km area, calculate the activity concentration (Bq/kg) by using the efficiency curve method, and estimate the committed effective dose of the local population. Results The natural radionuclides 40K, 238U, 232Th, 226Ra and artificial radionuclides 137Cs and 60Co were detected in food samples. The artificial radionuclides were just above the detectable limit. Other artificial radionuclides just like 131I、134Cs、58Co were not detected. The average radioactivity of 40K、238U、232Th、226Ra、137Cs were 12.858、0.550、0.146、0.077、0.016 Bq/kg,their range were 0.0266~2.2736,0.0013~1.3599,0.0127~0.2568,0.0043~0.0555,0.0065~0.0065,2.433~30.4572 Bq/kg respectively. The average radioactivity decreased in 40K、238U、232Th、226Ra、137Cs and 60Co in regular order. The committed effective dose of all radionuclides are 39.21μSv/a among which the artificial radionuclide part is 0.03 μSv/a.Conclusion No artificial radionuclides were detected except trace amounts of 137Cs and 60Co in the surrounding areas of Haiyang Nuclear Power Plant. The concentrations of all radionuclides in food are lower than the national standard limits which will lead a little dose burden.
