Abstract Objective To determine the effect of neutron radiation on expression of extracellular matrix (ECM) in renal tissue. Methods Renal cells separated from rats were exposed at 0.26-1.21 Gy neutron, and were maintained in serum-free medium for a further 48 h.Primary cultures were tested with RIA methods for expression of hyaluronan (HA), laminin (LN) and precollagen-Ⅲ(PCⅢ).Results HA and PCⅢ were reduced remarkably by 0.62 Gy neutron, and were not effected by 0.29 Gy and 1.21 Gy neutron;Irradiated with dose of 0.29 Gy and 1.21 Gy neutron could lead to a remarkable elevation of LN, but 0.62 Gy neutron has no effects to LN.Conclusion Lower dosage of neutron could lead to an altered production of ECM in rat renal tissue.
