Abstract Objective To explore the effects of β-carotene from salt algae on mouse thymocytes induced 60Co in vitro. Methods Cell proliferation of the cells was detected by MTT method, protein level, coomassie brilliant blue method, lymphocyte conversion ratio, smear method, and apoptosis, flowcytometry. Results After 4Gy 60Co irradiation, the cell proliferation and the lymphocyte conversion ratio of the thymocytes decreased and apoptosis rate increased significantly. When β-carotene was added into thymocytes before irradiation, cell proliferation and the lymphocyte conversion ratio increased with decreased apoptosis in a dose dependent manner (P<0.05, P<0.01).Conclusion β-carotene has the protective effects on the irradiation damage of mouse thymocytes induced by 60Co in vitro.
