Abstract Objective To study the radioprotection effect and its mechanism of the carrageenan with low molecular weight on irradiated mice. Methods The carrageenan with low molecular weight is applied to mice irradiated with 6.0 Gy rays.30-day survival rate was observed. The peripheral white blood cell counts, thrombocytes and erythrocytes were measured on 0,7,14 and 21 days respectively after irradiation. At various time points after irradiation, the activities of the antioxidant enzymes SOD and GSH-Px were assayed in the blood and liver tissues, and the damage to the cell membrane was studied by measuring lipid peroxides MDA levels. The spleen index was measured on day 21 after irradiation. Results 30-day survival rate significantly increased in carrageenan with low molecular weight group. The carrageenan with low molecular weight significantly promoted recovery of peripheral white blood cell, thrombocytes and erythrocytes, markedly increased spleen index. The carrageenan with low molecular weight significantly enhanced activities of the GSH-Px and SOD in blood, and decreased the MDA level in liver. Conclusion The carrageenan with low molecular weight has marked radioprotective effect on irradiated mice and the biological effect might be related to the hematopoiesis recovery and antioxidant activation.
