Abstract Objective For comparison of the entrance surface doses in the two types of computed orthopantomography(COPT) and cone beam CT(CBCT).Methods The thermoluminescence dosimeter (TLD) was used to measure the entrance surface doses (ESD) undergoing oral scans with COPT and CBCT in two types of oral CT. In the experiments, the TLD elements were placed at 12 focused points of the head phantom, and their doses were measured by the RGD-3B® reading system.Results For the two types of CT under COPT routinely using conditions, the ESDs of CBCT were all higher than those of COPT, and the ratios ranged from 1.2 to 9.8 and 1.8 to 14.4 for type A and type B device, respectively.Conclusion Dentists should realize different doses from the two inspection methods of COPT and CBCT, and select appropriate exposure conditions, guide the examinees to use the personal protective equipment correctly, in order to reduce radiation hazard to the lowest possible level.
